Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu

Most travelers who only visit Machu Picchu wish they'd spent a day in the Sacred Valley first. The terraced agricultural temples of Pisac, the colossal fortress of Ollantaytambo, the salt pans of Maras — these aren't sideshows. They're the context that makes the citadel make sense.

Overview

What this package is

This is the package we recommend most often. Not because it's the cheapest (it isn't), but because it's the one travelers consistently tell us they're most glad they chose. Three days, two nights, and a properly paced journey through Inca history.

Day one is the Sacred Valley: Pisac archaeological park (terraced agricultural temples carved into the mountainside), lunch at a local restaurant, then Ollantaytambo — the only Inca settlement still inhabited in its original urban grid. You sleep in a hotel in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba, well-acclimated to altitude (the valley sits ~600 m lower than Cusco, which helps).

Day two is the journey to Machu Picchu and your sunrise-window guided tour. Day three is your morning at the citadel and the return to Cusco. The pacing matters: you arrive at Machu Picchu already understanding what Inca engineering looks like, and you leave with the larger picture intact.

"The Sacred Valley is the textbook. Machu Picchu is the test. Most travelers skip the textbook — and miss most of the test."

The itinerary

Day 1 · Pisac · Lunch · Ollantaytambo · Hotel

Cusco to the Sacred Valley

Hotel pickup at 8:30 AM. We drive 1 hour to Pisac archaeological park, where your guide leads you through the agricultural terraces, ceremonial temples, and the largest Inca cemetery in the Andes. You'll have an hour at the famous Pisac market afterward — textiles, ceramics, and silver from the artisan villages of the valley.

Buffet lunch at a local restaurant in Urubamba (typical Andean cuisine — soup, main, dessert, with vegetarian options). Then we continue to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town still occupied in its original 15th-century grid. Your guide walks you through the massive stone fortress that towers over the village and into the streets below, where the original water channels still run.

Hotel check-in by 6:00 PM in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba. Free evening — most travelers walk the village, find a café, and call it an early night.

Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu

Hotel breakfast and check-out by 9:30 AM. We walk you to Ollantaytambo Station for the 10:30 AM train to Aguas Calientes (1 hour 45 minutes). You'll arrive around 12:15 PM.

Quick lunch in Aguas Calientes (not included — your guide recommends three options at different price points), then we head up to the citadel for the early-afternoon entry slot. Your guided Circuit 2 tour begins at 2:00 PM and lasts approximately 2.5 hours, finishing in time for late-afternoon golden hour photographs from the upper terraces.

Hotel check-in at your Aguas Calientes accommodation by 6:30 PM. Free evening to explore the town, relax at the thermal baths (optional), or rest before tomorrow's early morning return to the citadel.

Return to Cusco

Sleep in. Hotel breakfast at your own pace. Your train back to Ollantaytambo departs at 11:00 AM (we can adjust to a later time if preferred). The 1 hour 45 minute return journey gives you a different view of the Urubamba River canyon — you'll see things on this run you missed coming down.

We meet you at Ollantaytambo Station and drive you back to Cusco via the high pass (3,700 m), where you can stop for photos of the Andes if light permits. Optional stop at the textile center in Chinchero (15 minutes) to see weaving demonstrations.

Hotel drop-off in Cusco by approximately 3:30 PM. The package ends here — but most travelers stay 1–2 more nights in Cusco before flying back to Lima.

Questions

Frequent questions

Why visit the Sacred Valley before Machu Picchu? +
Two reasons. First, context: the agricultural and architectural techniques you'll see at Machu Picchu are the same ones used (and more clearly explained) at Pisac and Ollantaytambo. You arrive at the citadel already 'fluent' in Inca design. Second, altitude: the Sacred Valley sits at 2,800 m versus Cusco's 3,400 m, which makes for better sleep and easier acclimatization before the next day's activity.
Is the Pisac market a tourist trap? +
Partly, yes — like any famous market it has imported goods mixed with the authentic. But it's also the largest gathering point for textiles from the surrounding artisan villages (Chinchero, Pisac, Amaru), and Sunday is its main market day. Your guide will point out genuine handwoven pieces versus mass-produced ones. Bargaining is expected; about 20% off asking price is reasonable.
What's the hotel in the Sacred Valley? +
We typically use 3-star properties in Ollantaytambo (Hotel Pakaritampu, Kamma Guest House) or Urubamba (Tunupa Lodge, Sonesta Posadas). All have private bathrooms, hot water, breakfast, and Wi-Fi. Upgrades to 4-star or boutique (Sol y Luna, Tambo del Inka) available — typically $80–200 extra per night per room.
Can the order be reversed (Machu Picchu first, then Valley)? +
Yes, but we don't recommend it. The Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu sequence is better for both context and acclimatization. Reverse order works mainly for travelers with a fixed flight schedule that requires it. Tell us your constraints and we'll work around them.
What about Moray and the salt mines (Salineras)? +
Moray (circular Inca agricultural terraces) and Salineras (pre-Inca salt evaporation pans) are typically NOT included in the standard 3-day package due to time. They can be added as a half-day extension on Day 1 (~$80 extra per person) if you have flexibility on Day 1 ending. Many travelers prefer to do them on a separate day-tour from Cusco.
How fit do I need to be? +
Reasonable fitness for walking on uneven stone surfaces and climbing stairs. At Pisac you walk approximately 3 km with moderate slopes. Ollantaytambo fortress involves 200+ stone stairs to reach the top (optional — the lower viewpoint also works). Machu Picchu Circuit 2 involves 1.5–2 km of walking with stairs. No technical climbing or trekking equipment needed.
