Most travelers who only visit Machu Picchu wish they'd spent a day in the Sacred Valley first. The terraced agricultural temples of Pisac, the colossal fortress of Ollantaytambo, the salt pans of Maras — these aren't sideshows. They're the context that makes the citadel make sense.
This is the package we recommend most often. Not because it's the cheapest (it isn't), but because it's the one travelers consistently tell us they're most glad they chose. Three days, two nights, and a properly paced journey through Inca history.
Day one is the Sacred Valley: Pisac archaeological park (terraced agricultural temples carved into the mountainside), lunch at a local restaurant, then Ollantaytambo — the only Inca settlement still inhabited in its original urban grid. You sleep in a hotel in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba, well-acclimated to altitude (the valley sits ~600 m lower than Cusco, which helps).
Day two is the journey to Machu Picchu and your sunrise-window guided tour. Day three is your morning at the citadel and the return to Cusco. The pacing matters: you arrive at Machu Picchu already understanding what Inca engineering looks like, and you leave with the larger picture intact.
Realistic timings, hand-built around weather, altitude, and the rhythm of actual Cusco operations.
Hotel pickup at 8:30 AM. We drive 1 hour to Pisac archaeological park, where your guide leads you through the agricultural terraces, ceremonial temples, and the largest Inca cemetery in the Andes. You'll have an hour at the famous Pisac market afterward — textiles, ceramics, and silver from the artisan villages of the valley.
Buffet lunch at a local restaurant in Urubamba (typical Andean cuisine — soup, main, dessert, with vegetarian options). Then we continue to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town still occupied in its original 15th-century grid. Your guide walks you through the massive stone fortress that towers over the village and into the streets below, where the original water channels still run.
Hotel check-in by 6:00 PM in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba. Free evening — most travelers walk the village, find a café, and call it an early night.
Hotel breakfast and check-out by 9:30 AM. We walk you to Ollantaytambo Station for the 10:30 AM train to Aguas Calientes (1 hour 45 minutes). You'll arrive around 12:15 PM.
Quick lunch in Aguas Calientes (not included — your guide recommends three options at different price points), then we head up to the citadel for the early-afternoon entry slot. Your guided Circuit 2 tour begins at 2:00 PM and lasts approximately 2.5 hours, finishing in time for late-afternoon golden hour photographs from the upper terraces.
Hotel check-in at your Aguas Calientes accommodation by 6:30 PM. Free evening to explore the town, relax at the thermal baths (optional), or rest before tomorrow's early morning return to the citadel.
Sleep in. Hotel breakfast at your own pace. Your train back to Ollantaytambo departs at 11:00 AM (we can adjust to a later time if preferred). The 1 hour 45 minute return journey gives you a different view of the Urubamba River canyon — you'll see things on this run you missed coming down.
We meet you at Ollantaytambo Station and drive you back to Cusco via the high pass (3,700 m), where you can stop for photos of the Andes if light permits. Optional stop at the textile center in Chinchero (15 minutes) to see weaving demonstrations.
Hotel drop-off in Cusco by approximately 3:30 PM. The package ends here — but most travelers stay 1–2 more nights in Cusco before flying back to Lima.
