Two of the most photographed places in Peru — the turquoise glacial water of Humantay Lake at 4,200 meters, and the citadel of Machu Picchu — in a single, well-paced six-day package. The lake without the trek. The wonder without the rush.
Many travelers see Humantay Lake on Instagram and want to visit, but don't want to commit to the 5-day Salkantay Trek that traditionally includes it. This package solves that. You visit Humantay Lake on a dedicated day-tour from Cusco (a strenuous but achievable day hike, no overnight camping), then continue with the standard Cusco–Sacred Valley–Machu Picchu sequence.
Day one is arrival and Cusco city tour. Day two is the Humantay Lake day-trip — early start (4:30 AM), a 3-hour drive, a 2-hour uphill hike to the lake at 4,200 m, two hours at the lake, and return to Cusco by evening. Day three is rest day or optional Rainbow Mountain. Day four is the Sacred Valley. Day five is Machu Picchu (afternoon entry plus sunrise return Day 6). Day six is return to Cusco and departure.
The challenge is altitude: Humantay Lake is 4,200 m. This package builds in proper acclimatization (Days 1 and 3) so the lake day doesn't wreck you. Solid hiking fitness is required for that one day; the rest is regular touring.
Realistic timings, hand-built around weather, altitude, and the rhythm of actual Cusco operations.
Airport pickup and hotel transfer at any arrival time. After light rest at your hotel, the afternoon Cusco city tour begins at 1:30 PM (or adjusts to Day 2 morning if you arrive late).
The tour covers Coricancha (Sun Temple), the Cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and the four nearby Inca sites: Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay. Approximately 4 hours total.
Drop-off at hotel by 6:30 PM. Light dinner in the historic center is the typical evening. Early to bed — tomorrow's start is brutal.
Hotel pickup at 4:30 AM (yes, really). We drive 3 hours to Mollepata for breakfast, then continue to Soraypampa (3,900 m), the trailhead for Humantay Lake. The hike begins at approximately 9:00 AM.
The trail climbs 300 vertical meters in 2 hours — steady uphill on a rocky path. Difficulty is moderate, but altitude makes it feel harder than it would at sea level. You arrive at the lake (4,200 m) around 11:00 AM. The water is famously turquoise from glacial silt, set directly beneath Salkantay's snowfields. Most travelers spend 90 minutes at the lake: photographs, picnic lunch (included), brief Andean offering ceremony if you wish.
Descent takes 90 minutes. Back at the trailhead by 2:30 PM. Lunch is technically eaten at the lake (we pack picnic boxes); upon return there's usually time for hot tea before the long drive back to Cusco. Hotel drop-off by 7:30 PM. This is a hard day; most travelers eat a quick dinner and sleep.
By design, this is a recovery day. Most travelers rest, walk the historic center at their own pace, visit Coricancha or the San Pedro market for items they missed on Day 1, or take a half-day cooking class (popular option, can be arranged).
Optional add-on: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) day-tour. Another very early start (4:00 AM), 3-hour drive, 2-hour hike up to 5,200 m, time at the colorful sandstone formation, and return. Cost approximately $70 extra per person. This is a tough day at extreme altitude and we don't recommend it the day after Humantay — but if you absolutely must, it can be arranged.
Free evening in Cusco. Many travelers use this night for a proper dinner at a recommended restaurant (we provide three options at different price points).
Same as Day 2 of the Classic 5-day package. Hotel pickup at 8:30 AM, Pisac archaeological park and market in the morning.
Buffet lunch in Urubamba. Afternoon at Ollantaytambo fortress and village.
Hotel check-in at Ollantaytambo or Urubamba by 6:00 PM.
Same as Day 3 of the Classic 5-day package. Morning train from Ollantaytambo at 10:30 AM, arrival in Aguas Calientes 12:15 PM.
Lunch on your own, then bus up to the citadel for afternoon Circuit 2 guided tour starting 2:30 PM.
Hotel check-in in Aguas Calientes after golden-hour photography. Free evening.
Optional sunrise return at 5:00 AM (highly recommended). Back at hotel by 9:00 AM, check-out, and free morning in Aguas Calientes.
Afternoon train to Ollantaytambo, private transport to Cusco airport. If you have a late flight, we can drop you at your Cusco hotel for a brief rest before the airport.
If your flight is the next day, we instead drop you in Cusco for one final night (additional charge for hotel).
