Humantay Lake & Machu Picchu

Two of the most photographed places in Peru — the turquoise glacial water of Humantay Lake at 4,200 meters, and the citadel of Machu Picchu — in a single, well-paced six-day package. The lake without the trek. The wonder without the rush.

Overview

What this package is

Many travelers see Humantay Lake on Instagram and want to visit, but don't want to commit to the 5-day Salkantay Trek that traditionally includes it. This package solves that. You visit Humantay Lake on a dedicated day-tour from Cusco (a strenuous but achievable day hike, no overnight camping), then continue with the standard Cusco–Sacred Valley–Machu Picchu sequence.

Day one is arrival and Cusco city tour. Day two is the Humantay Lake day-trip — early start (4:30 AM), a 3-hour drive, a 2-hour uphill hike to the lake at 4,200 m, two hours at the lake, and return to Cusco by evening. Day three is rest day or optional Rainbow Mountain. Day four is the Sacred Valley. Day five is Machu Picchu (afternoon entry plus sunrise return Day 6). Day six is return to Cusco and departure.

The challenge is altitude: Humantay Lake is 4,200 m. This package builds in proper acclimatization (Days 1 and 3) so the lake day doesn't wreck you. Solid hiking fitness is required for that one day; the rest is regular touring.

"Most travelers regret not doing Humantay. Most who do it on the Salkantay Trek wish they'd done a day-tour version instead. This is the day-tour version, properly contextualized."

Day 2 · Pre-Dawn Departure · Glacial Lake · Return to Cusco

Humantay Lake Day-Tour

Hotel pickup at 4:30 AM (yes, really). We drive 3 hours to Mollepata for breakfast, then continue to Soraypampa (3,900 m), the trailhead for Humantay Lake. The hike begins at approximately 9:00 AM.

The trail climbs 300 vertical meters in 2 hours — steady uphill on a rocky path. Difficulty is moderate, but altitude makes it feel harder than it would at sea level. You arrive at the lake (4,200 m) around 11:00 AM. The water is famously turquoise from glacial silt, set directly beneath Salkantay's snowfields. Most travelers spend 90 minutes at the lake: photographs, picnic lunch (included), brief Andean offering ceremony if you wish.

Descent takes 90 minutes. Back at the trailhead by 2:30 PM. Lunch is technically eaten at the lake (we pack picnic boxes); upon return there's usually time for hot tea before the long drive back to Cusco. Hotel drop-off by 7:30 PM. This is a hard day; most travelers eat a quick dinner and sleep.

Day 3 · Free Day in Cusco — Or Add Vinicunca

Rest Day or Optional Rainbow Mountain

By design, this is a recovery day. Most travelers rest, walk the historic center at their own pace, visit Coricancha or the San Pedro market for items they missed on Day 1, or take a half-day cooking class (popular option, can be arranged).

Optional add-on: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) day-tour. Another very early start (4:00 AM), 3-hour drive, 2-hour hike up to 5,200 m, time at the colorful sandstone formation, and return. Cost approximately $70 extra per person. This is a tough day at extreme altitude and we don't recommend it the day after Humantay — but if you absolutely must, it can be arranged.

Free evening in Cusco. Many travelers use this night for a proper dinner at a recommended restaurant (we provide three options at different price points).

  • Open — Free day, your pace
  • Optional — Rainbow Mountain day-tour (+$70/pp)
  • Optional — Cooking class half-day (+$50/pp)

Questions

Frequent questions

How hard is the Humantay Lake hike, really? +
Honest answer: harder than most travelers expect. It's only 5 km round trip and 300 m vertical gain — sounds easy. But the trailhead starts at 3,900 m and the lake is at 4,200 m, where oxygen is roughly 60% of sea level. The climb takes 1.5–2 hours; descending takes 1 hour. If you're reasonably active and well-acclimatized (3+ days at altitude before), you'll be fine. If you're sedentary or have respiratory conditions, you may struggle. Horses are available for hire ($25–30 round trip) for those who need help.
Why is this package 6 days instead of 5? +
Because Humantay Lake is an extra day. The Cusco–Valley–MP loop is 5 days; adding Humantay as a dedicated day-tour requires the sixth. The Day 3 'rest day' is also important — recovering from Humantay before doing the Sacred Valley makes the trip far more enjoyable.
What if I can't make it to the lake? +
Plenty of travelers turn around partway. The viewpoint at 4,050 m (15 minutes below the lake) still has stunning views back toward Salkantay. Your guide stays with the group — if you decide to wait at the viewpoint, that's fine. We will not push you up if you're symptomatic. No refunds for not reaching the lake, but no judgment either.
Can I combine Humantay with the Salkantay Trek instead? +
If you have 8–10 days available, yes — and we recommend it. Our Salkantay 5-day trek includes Humantay on Day 1 as a natural side-trip. Then you continue trekking to Machu Picchu instead of returning to Cusco. But that requires solid trekking fitness for 5 days; this 6-day package gives you Humantay without committing to the full trek.
Is the Humantay water actually that color? +
Yes. The turquoise color is from glacial silt — finely ground rock suspended in the meltwater. The color is real, not Instagram filtering. It's slightly less vivid in heavy rain or overcast conditions, and most vivid on clear sunny days at midday. We time the hike to maximize your time at the lake during peak color hours.
What about altitude sickness? +
Real risk on Day 2. Mitigation: 2+ full days in Cusco before Day 2 (we build this in), 3–4 liters of water daily, no alcohol on Day 1, coca tea or coca leaves, pharmacy altitude tablets (Soroche pills) if you wish. Your guide carries oxygen. If you feel seriously unwell (severe headache, vomiting, confusion), descent is mandatory and immediate.
