Overview

What this package is

Most 7-8 day Cusco packages either lean cultural (lots of hotels, no trekking) or lean active (multi-day trek with no city or valley days). The Challenge combines both: cultural days for context and acclimatization, then a 2-day Short Inca Trail with Sun Gate arrival, then the iconic high-altitude day-trips. It's the most complete Cusco-region experience we offer.

Day 1 arrival, Day 2 Cusco city, Day 3 Sacred Valley, Days 4–5 Short Inca Trail with Sun Gate finish, Day 6 Rainbow Mountain, Day 7 Humantay Lake, Day 8 departure. Inca Trail permits required for Days 4–5; this means you must book at minimum 3 months ahead, often 5–6 months in high season.

Difficulty is real. The Short Inca Trail involves a 12 km hiking day; Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,200 m; Humantay sits at 4,200 m. By the end of Day 7 you'll have completed approximately 25 km of trekking and reached altitudes most travelers never see. The reward is the kind of trip you'll talk about for years.

"If a single phrase captures this package: nothing left undone."

Questions

Frequent questions

Is 8 days too long for the Cusco region? +
It's the right amount if you want the full set. Five days covers Cusco-Valley-Machu Picchu but misses the high-altitude wonders. Six adds Humantay. Seven adds Rainbow. Eight adds the Short Inca Trail experience. Beyond eight, you're either repeating things or extending to other regions (Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, Lima). For Cusco specifically, 8 days is the natural cap.
Do I really need Inca Trail permits for the Short Trail? +
Yes. Even the 2-day version requires permits, which book out 2–3 months ahead in high season. This means Day 4's trek date must be locked at booking time, and your other dates flex around it. If permits aren't available for your preferred dates, we can substitute a different activity (e.g., overnight at Machu Picchu with afternoon and sunrise visits) and reduce the price accordingly.
How fit do I need to be? +
Solid fitness. The 8-day Challenge includes: full hiking day on Inca Trail (12 km, 7-8 hours), Rainbow Mountain (4 km round trip, but at 5,200 m), Humantay (5 km round trip, 4,200 m), plus regular walking each day. Over 8 days you'll cover approximately 35 km on foot at altitude. If you walk 5+ km comfortably and have done some hiking, you can do this. If you're sedentary, choose the 7-day Experience instead (no Inca Trail trekking day).
Is there a 'rest day' built in? +
Day 3 is essentially a rest/acclimatization day in Ollantaytambo. The other days are all active. If you want more rest, add Day 8 morning to the package (we move the airport transfer to a later flight or next day) — this is free if hotel is already booked. For travelers who want true rest, we can convert one of the high-altitude days into a free day with no penalty.
Can I do the Classic 4-day Inca Trail instead of the Short 2-day? +
Yes, but it changes the package structure significantly. The Classic 4-day eats Days 4–7, leaving only Day 8 for one day-tour. So you'd lose either Rainbow Mountain or Humantay. The total price would also increase by approximately $250 per person. Tell us if you want this version and we'll quote it specifically.
What happens with weather? +
Cusco region operates year-round. Wet season (November–March) means daily afternoon rain — manageable but plan for it. Dry season (April–October) means cold mornings and clearer skies. February has the Inca Trail closed (so this package isn't available in February). Rainbow Mountain in heavy fog can be a disappointment (the colors are subdued); we monitor conditions and can sometimes shift days within the package to optimize.
